The fund is named in memory of Bertha C. Leigh and Roy E. Leigh, parents of Duane E. Leigh, former Professor and Chair of the WSU Department of Economics. Bertha passed away in March, 1999, and Roy passed away in April, 2007.

Roy Leigh is a 1938 WSU Science (Geology) graduate and spent his career as a geologist. Roy and Bertha’s three children all graduated from WSU: Duane E. Leigh (1964, Economics), Sharon Ann Leigh Hoisington (1965, Education), Alan R. Leigh (1974, Engineering and Architecture). Duane completed his master and doctoral studies at Michigan State University and joined the WSU faculty in 1968. Bertha Leigh took great pride in her children and was interested in their association with Washington State University.
